Beyoncé Surpasses Jay-Z for Most Grammy Nominations of All Time

Beyoncé has made history by becoming the most-nominated artist of all time at the Grammy Awards, overtaking her husband, Jay-Z.

The powerhouse couple had been tied with 88 nominations each until now. Beyoncé’s latest album, Cowboy Carter, pushed her ahead, earning her 11 Grammy nominations this year, including Best Album, Best Country Album, and Song of the Year for Texas Hold ‘Em.

This year’s other leading Grammy nominees include Billie Eilish, Kendrick Lamar, Post Malone, and Charli XCX, each with seven nominations. The Beatles also garnered a Record of the Year nod for Now And Then, an unfinished John Lennon track completed with AI, marking 60 years since they won Best New Artist.

Beyoncé is already the Recording Academy’s most-awarded artist, boasting 32 solo wins and three additional awards from her time with Destiny’s Child. Despite her monumental success, she has yet to win the Album of the Year trophy after four nominations. Earlier this year, Jay-Z spoke out about Beyoncé’s absence in the category, highlighting the irony of her record-breaking Grammy tally without a top album win.

With her 11 nominations, Beyoncé has now set a new record for the most nominations received by a female artist in a single year.

This year, Beyoncé faces strong competition from Taylor Swift, who has won Album of the Year four times—a record for any artist.

Swift’s latest release, The Tortured Poets Department, a raw and sprawling breakup album created amid her demanding world tour, held the top spot on U.S. charts for 15 weeks earlier this year. The project has now earned her a seventh Album of the Year nomination.

Other notable contenders include Charli XCX, whose edgy pop album Brat has received critical acclaim, and Billie Eilish, a Grammys favorite, who returns with her sophisticated, experimental third album Hit Me Hard And Soft.

In a surprising twist, former Outkast rapper André 3000 also landed a nomination for his instrumental flute album, New Blue Sun, edging out expected nominees like Ariana Grande and Post Malone.

Grammys 2025 nominations – who has the most?

Grammy Nominees by the Numbers

  • 11 – Beyoncé
  • 7 – Billie Eilish, Kendrick Lamar, Post Malone, Charli XCX
  • 6 – Taylor Swift, Sabrina Carpenter, Chappell Roan

Breakout pop sensations Sabrina Carpenter and Chappell Roan have made waves with nominations in all four major categories: Album, Song, and Record of the Year, as well as Best New Artist.

Carpenter earned a Record of the Year nomination for her playful summer anthem Espresso, recognized for its full production, including vocal and instrumental quality. She’s also nominated for Song of the Year for her heartfelt country-inspired ballad Please Please Please, an accolade for outstanding songwriting.

Roan, riding high after a breakthrough year, received nods for her hit single Good Luck, Babe! in both Record and Song of the Year categories. The Missouri-born artist is also a frontrunner for Best New Artist, with her debut album The Rise And Fall Of A Midwest Princess competing for Album of the Year.

Other key nominees include British artist Raye, acknowledged for Songwriter of the Year and Best New Artist. The Rolling Stones secured a spot for Best Rock Album with Hackney Diamonds, their first original release since 2016.

Kendrick Lamar also made a strong showing, with five nominations for his track Not Like Us, a diss aimed at Drake, including Best Rap Song and Song of the Year.

Meanwhile, former President Jimmy Carter set a record as the oldest Grammy nominee, shortlisted at age 100 for Best Audiobook with Last Sundays In Plains, a collection of his teachings as a Sunday School teacher.

Notable Snubs
While female pop stars took center stage in the top categories, some major names were left out. Katy Perry’s latest album, 143, failed to earn any nominations, as did Dua Lipa’s Radical Optimism despite her high-profile Grammy performance. Despite its chart dominance, Dolly Parton’s rock debut Rock Star, Megan Thee Stallion’s third album, and the K-pop genre were also absent from this year’s list.

Country artist Zach Bryan was also absent from the nominee list. He chose not to submit his work, citing discomfort with awards in competitive music spaces.

Grammy Voting Updates
This year, 20,309 submissions were made across the 94 Grammy categories. With 2,000 new members added to the voting body, now totaling 13,000, nearly two-thirds of Grammy voters have joined since 2018 as part of a push to diversify and modernize the Academy. Grammys CEO Harvey Mason Jr. urged voters to uphold integrity, saying there is “no place in our organization for bias or careless voting.”

The Grammy winners will be announced at a star-studded ceremony in Los Angeles on February 2, 2025
