Taylor Swift’s record-breaking ‘Eras’ tour set for final show in Canada

Taylor Swift's record-breaking 'Eras' tour set for final show in Canada
On September 20, 2022, in Nashville, Tennessee, Taylor Swift, the Songwriter-Artist of the Decade recipient, sings at the Ryman Auditorium during the NSAI 2022 Nashville Songwriter Awards.

Canada’s Toronto—On Sunday, Taylor Swift’s historic “Eras Tour” will conclude in Vancouver with the last show of what has quickly become the highest-grossing musical tour in history.

On March 17, 2023, the international tournament began in the US state of Arizona.

With stops from Buenos Aires to Paris and Tokyo, the American singer/songwriter will have performed 149 gigs by the time it concludes this weekend in the Canadian metropolis.

Although Swift’s team has not made the tour’s ticket sales figures public, the highly regarded trade publication Pollstar has calculated that the total is well over $2 billion.

That breaks the previous record set by Elton John’s “Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour,” which was interrupted by the pandemic and sold an estimated $939 million in tickets over 328 gigs over five years.

Swift’s presence in venue cities has boosted local economies in addition to the concerts.

She played six gigs over two weekends in Toronto, which was her second-to-last tour stop.

According to Destination Toronto, a travel promotion group, she increased economic activity in Canada’s largest city by an additional $282 million ($199 million).

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his family went to one of the performances in Toronto.

Before it was revealed last year that “Eras” would stop in Canada, Trudeau publicly pleaded with Swift to attend.

“I’m sure you’d be welcomed in several Canadian locations. In July 2023, Trudeau wrote on X, “So, don’t make it another ‘Cruel Summer.’ We hope to see you soon,” alluding to the popular song “Lover” from Swift’s 2019 album.

Swift’s political fame during “Eras” wasn’t entirely favorable.

Swift backed the Democrat for president shortly after the September US presidential debate between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris.

The former president’s Truth Social platform had an all-caps Trump tweet that said, “I HATE TAYLOR SWIFT.”

‘Super Bowl suspense’

With reviews applauding Swift’s endurance and intensity through performances that have averaged just under four hours, “Eras” also received stellar critical acclaim.

On the first night in Glendale, Arizona, the New York Times referred to it as a “master class.” The Vancouver Sun described her third-to-last performance on Friday as “spectacular.”

Three performances were canceled in Vienna this summer after a man was detained by police in connection with a conspiracy to carry out an Islamist assault.

And last November, tragedy struck when a fan passed away from heat exhaustion while attending a play in Rio de Janeiro.

Many fans were frustrated by the unprecedented demand for tickets, which first prompted Ticketmaster to abandon its presale plans.

There was also a suspenseful “will she, won’t she” moment in Eras that went beyond pop music.

After wrapping off a performance in Tokyo on February 10, Swift had to decide if she would have enough time to go to Las Vegas in time for the start of football’s Super Bowl to watch her boyfriend, Travis Kelce, play for the Kansas City Chiefs.

Seldom does a non-football plot take center stage before America’s biggest athletic event.

Swift’s itinerary was a major source of worry, though, and the Japanese embassy in Washington confirmed in a statement that she would “comfortably” attend the game.

Swift had a beer while watching the Chiefs defeat the San Francisco 49ers from a private box with Kelce’s mother, Donna, in front of more than 200 million television viewers.
