MANILA, Philippines — Filipino New Zealander Frankie Russell, who ended her Kiwi journey in the top 21, won the Best National Costume award at the inaugural Miss Cosmo 2024 pageant held in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, on Saturday night.
The former “Pinoy Big Brother” housemate missed out on a place in the top 10, with fellow Filipina contestant Ahatisa Manalo securing a spot.
But Russell won the Best National Costume award because she wore a black creation called “Kiwi Angel.”
Russell said the national costume, designed by Simeon Cayetano, embodied New Zealand’s “strength, resilience and resilience.”
“Inspiration for the costume comes from our rich culture. The black and silver colours reflect pop culture, wildlife and national symbols. The black pays tribute to the internationally renowned rugby team, the All Blacks, a symbol of sporting excellence that resonates with many New Zealanders.
“The bodice is inspired by the kiwi bird, a rare and endangered species of New Zealand wildlife. Plus, our national symbol, the silver fern, represents unity and pride and is deeply rooted in our country.
“These elements come together to create the Kiwi Angel, which symbolizes the optimism and strength of New Zealand and its people,” Franchi wrote on Instagram.
