MANILA, Philippines — Filipino singer Sofronio Vasquez has won “The Voice USA.”
When he was announced as one of the five finalists, he said in a social media post that he was “thankful to my fellow Filipinos around the world and in America for the immense love and support they have shown me.”
Sofronio’s final performance of “A Million Dreams” from the film “The Greatest Showman” was already the top video on The Voice’s Facebook page even before he was announced as the winner.
Sofronio is a former “Tawag ng Tanghalan” contestant on “It’s Showtime.” He only made it to the semifinals in the regional competition. “Failed auditions for TNT (Philippine singing competition) 7 times. No chair to turn on The Voice Philippines and Now! The Voice USA Top 5 Finale,” one fan commented on a YouTube video of The Voice featuring Sofronio’s top 5 performances.
Vasquez is reportedly not only the first Filipino to win the global singing competition, but also the first Asian. — “The Voice” video via YouTube
