From House to Senate? Camille Villar Formalizes Bid

MANILA, Philippines — Vice-Chairman Camille Villar filed his candidacy papers with the Commission on Elections on Friday, October 4, to run for senatorial office.

Villar, running on the Nacionalista Party ticket, is among President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s “Alianza para sa Bagong Pilipinas” senatorial candidates.

Marcos praised Villar for his leadership in both the public and private sectors.

“The 12th person on my list has shown wisdom in leadership, not only in government but also in businesses that serve the people,” Marcos said in Filipino when he announced the government’s 2025 list of candidates on September 26.

Villar is among the few newcomers to a list dominated by returning senators and seasoned politicians.

She is the daughter of outgoing Senator Cynthia Villar and tycoon Manny Villar, consistently ranked among the top five richest people in the Philippines. Manny has an estimated net worth of $10.9 billion, according to Forbes magazine’s 2024 rankings.

Camille currently represents the sole Las Piñas City constituency in the House of Representatives, a position she has held since 2019.

Legislative Balance Sheet. In the House of Representatives, Camille promoted several policies focused on science and education. Notable bills she has authored or co-authored include:

A bill to promote research and development in virology
A bill to mandate the inclusion of entrepreneurship as a separate subject in middle and high schools
Her legislative work reflects the convergence of public health and economics; a commitment to empowerment that coincides with her background in business and government;

Family influence; If elected, Camille Villar would further expand her family’s political influence, following in the footsteps of her father, who served as a senator, her mother, Cynthia, who was a senator for more than a decade, and her brother, Marc, a former minister of public works; and Highways.
