Luchi Cruz-Valdes, one of the most respected figures in Philippine broadcasting, has officially retired after 15 remarkable years as the head of TV5’s news organization, News5. Under her leadership, News5 grew into a major force in Filipino journalism, known for its innovative reporting and commitment to public service.
To honor her exceptional contributions, TV5, led by President and CEO Guido R. Zaballero, hosted a special tribute at the TV5 Media Center Studio 6 in Mandaluyong. Luchi’s legacy includes pioneering initiatives such as the 360/News5 Everywhere digital platform, Radyo5 92.3 True FM, and AksyonTV—an all-day Filipino news channel. She was also instrumental in launching One News, the premium news channel on Cignal TV.
During her time at News5, Luchi oversaw coverage of three presidential elections, utilizing cutting-edge technology through partnerships with PLDT and Smart Communications. Her role as moderator of the 2016 presidential debate remains a significant moment in Philippine political history.
Just earlier this year, Luchi was awarded the Best TV Public Affairs Program Host at the 12th Makatao Awards for Media Excellence by the People Management Association of the Philippines (PMAP). Her illustrious career also includes co-hosting the acclaimed documentary series “The Probe Team” with Cheche Lazaro.
Luchi Cruz-Valdes’ departure marks the end of an era for TV5, but her trailblazing work will continue to inspire the next generation of journalists.
