MANILA, Philippines – After a two-month hiatus, top-tier tennis action resumes on Thursday, October 10, when the Senator Edwin Olivarez National Open Series II and National Junior Championships kick off in Sucat, Parañaque.
To accommodate the large number of participants, organizers have expanded the event to be held at both the Olivarez Sports Center and the Parañaque courts. The two-week tournament will bring together the country’s experienced players and promising young talents.
At the head of the field is Eric Jed Olivarez, fresh from his victory in the Mayor Eric Olivarez National Open in August, defeating multiple titleholder Johnny Arcilla. As the top seed in the 64-player field, Olivares is seeking another Open title, with notable contenders including doubles partners Vicente Anasta, Eric Tangub, Lucas Fernandez, John Mari Altice, Noel Salpado, John Benedict Aguilar, and Lance Fernandez.
Olivares and Anastas will also compete in the boys’ doubles division and will face stiff competition from the pair of Rory Saga and Brian Sarenas. Other notable doubles teams include Lucas and Lance Fernandez, Artique and Alberto Villamor, Agustinez and Brent Cortes, and Tangub and Elvin Gers.
Meanwhile, the junior matches will begin on Friday, October 11, with Antonio Ng Jr., Adrian Cajitola, James Yosoles, JB Aquino, Ethan Cabritas, Joshua Diva, Phil Amora and Enrico Uy heading the boys’ under-18 division.
Meanwhile, in the Group 2 tournament, Stephie Aldo, Joy Ansay, Jillianne Tenoria, and Michaela Gou will lead the girls’ team. The Group 2 tournament is part of the national tournament hosted by Palawan President and CEO Bobby Castro. The pawnshop was established to promote the sport and unearth emerging talent, especially from the provinces.
The tournament will also feature Legend Men’s Doubles in the 30, 40, 50, and 60 age categories, and Women’s Doubles in the 35 and 45 age categories. The collegiate division will feature men’s and women’s singles and doubles matches and will run from Oct. 14-20.
According to Bobby Mangnay, tournament director and head of sports program development for PPS-PEPP, the weekend-only individual and team competitions began last weekend and will be held on April 12-13. and 19/20. and continued in October.
Other titles include a boys’ and girls’ division for age groups 16, 14 and 12 and under, and a unisex division for those 10 and under. The tournament is sponsored by Filter, Dunlop, Universal Tennis, and Icon Golf & Sports.
