MANILA, Philippines – Kevin Quiambao scored a new record with 33 points to lead the La Salle Green Archers to an 80-65 victory over the Ateneo Blue Eagles in the UAAP Season 87 Men’s Basketball Tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena on Saturday. The reigning UAAP Most Valuable Player recorded 33 points (18 of which came in the first half), 12 rebounds and two assists in the rivalry match. This is the second time Quiambao has broken the points record this season. Last week, he scored 29 points in a 94-87 overtime win over the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers. The Green Archers have solidified their lead in the standings and are now 10-1. After Doy Dango scored on a split from the line, La Salle led by 17 points, 73-56, with 6:09 remaining.
An 8-0 run by Ateneo, capped by a three-pointer from Shawn Quitebis, cut the lead to nine points, 64-73, with 3:47 remaining.
After a timeout, the Blue Eagles tightened defensively, but Mike Phillips found the penetrating Quiambao, who collapsed home with a huge dunk to extend the lead to 11 points, 75-64.
A split from the line by Andrew Bongo on the other end gave La Salle a 10-point lead, 65-75, but a putback from Phillips and a three-pointer from Joshua David capped it all off.
David and EJ Gorena had nine markers each for the Taft-based team.
Ateneo’s Jared Bahay scored a career-high 22 but was -21 points for the game. He also had four assists and two rebounds.
The Blue Eagles are now 3-7.
